Hi there. I’m in a bit of a predicament here. I need to have this footage finished by morning, and I’m having some issues. I’m sorry if it’s already been answered somewhere, or if it’s because I have no idea what I’m doing, but I need some help. I’m down to the final minutes here. So, here’s the issue:

I was working on a piece of footage in Final Cut Express, then exported it with no compression. From there, I imported it into After Effects, did my work, then exported it again, compressed with the Apple Intermediate Codec. Then, I import again into Final Cut and all of a sudden, the audio is out of sync and the end of the clips is being cut off. Now, I’m still new to all of this, and I’m not sure what information you’ll need, but let me know, I’ll try and find out.

My question is – why’s it doing that? I can’t have it chopping off the ends of my clips. The audio I could deal with later, since we also recorded it separately, but the clips I need…

One thing I did notice, when I open the After Effects export file with Quicktime, it says the FPS is 30, whereas when I open it with Final Cut, it says it’s 24. Could this make a difference? I’m re-exporting one of my After Effects files at 24 FPS to see if it does anything, but I have no idea.

Anything would be appreciated. As I said, I’m still new to all of this, and I’m going to be screwed if I don’t figure this out in a few hours. So, yeah. That’s the deal. Thanks.

30fps is the wrong frame rate. The correct frame is 29.97. Make sure that’s what your comp setting is and that’s what you’re exporting.

    All the best,

Well, the good news is that I have some more time to finish this project up now. Met with everyone today and it’s not such a big deal. Which is good. Anyway, that’s not the important part.

Thanks, Tom. When I said 30, I did mean 29.97, and 24 was 23.98. Sorry, probably would have been helpful if I’d been more specific. However, what you said gave me an idea. Because the problem I was having (it seems like) was that After Effects was exporting it as 29.97, even though it needed to be 23.98, so it finished counting up the frames a lot earlier than the actual end was (if that’s something that could make sense. I’m not sure if that’s even real logic). But either way, I exported it, specifying 23.98 FPS and it seemed to work. Or rather, it took until almost the end of the footage (about 6 minutes in) before the dialogue was off. However, it would also cause the solid I drew in After Effects to jitter and make movements that I didn’t animate. After looking around the After Effects forums, I saw a bunch of people saying that it should actually be 23.976 FPS, and that’s probably my issue. At least I hope it is. I have it exporting right now at 23.976, and I’ll see if that makes it work. WIthout my solid going wrong.

Thanks for listening, I’ll see if this helps. And let me know if what I’m saying is completely wrong. I spelled out my thought process so if I’m crazy… I’m learning it as I go, but maybe something’s fixed. Guess we’ll see.
