Complete novice on a steep learning curve here.
I’ve transferred unedited footage from 18 Hi8 tapes to FCP taking up 340gb of hard disc space.
I’d like to transfer all those files on to DVD in such a way that I would be able to get them back to their previous state in order to edit them and if need be output them again to DVD for storage.
I guessing the way to go would be via a self-contained film but the size of files would be way too big.
What would I lose by going down the reference Quicktime movie route, if that’s the best way to go and how would I go about transferring the DVD files back into FCP for editing?
    Thanks in advance

A reference movie only works when it has access to the media and render files and there are no changes whatsoever in that media. As soon as there is a change the file is inoperable.

Basically you can’t do what you want to do unless you use a heck of a lot of DVD discs.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Thanks for that Tom.
So short of getting more hard disc or a shed load of DVDs, how best then to store these files.
Is compression not an option and if so what settings?
