Only video – not audio
Posted by Clara Gordon on October 25, 2008 at 3:27 pmHi!
I have two easy qüestions which will help me working faster. One is: how can I insert a clip from the viewer to the timeline, but only the video (and not the audio)? What I do know is insert the whole clip, and then delete the audio. I think it must be a faster way to do it.
The second one is: are there any shortcut to put the transition which you most use (in that case would be Cross Dissolve)?
Thanks!
Clara.

October 25, 2008 at 6:00 pmShort cut for the dissolve is cmd + t for video and cmd + alt + t for the audio. I dont know any way to put video on to the timeline with out audio, im not sure its something the developers envisioned people needing to do.

This is actually quite simple and I’ll be glad to help you.
Double click a clip into the Viewer.
Now look at your timeline. You probably have 2 to 8 audio tracks available to you, but probably two of them have the Audio Selection tabs active. These are the grey tabs that probably say A1 and A2.
Just click on those grey Audio Selection tabs and you’ll notice they “break apart,” that is the A1 and A2 split.
This split means you no longer have Audio selected and if you make the edit, only Video will be inserted into the timeline.
The same is true of the Video track. If you click on the Video Selection tab, it will disconnect and you’ll only insert audio.
On your other question, you can Make a Favorite to have the Dissolve always there or even drag the transition to your Browser and just keep re-using it.

Absolutely it was envisioned, has been since version 1 of the software. Can’t have a professional video editing software without having the ability to do split edits, that is inserting only video or audio into the timeline.

As a follow-up, check out my tutorial on using Tabs. The very first thing I show is how to pull out the Effects Tab and this allows you to drag and drop for your entire Effects bin easily.

July 21, 2011 at 5:03 pmhey Walter,
regarding dropping video to timeline minus audio. (I taught myself avid originally, so my terminology may hark back to that)
I’m familiar with switching off the patch source buttons on the timeline (breaking away A1 + A2 etc before doing the drag to timeline). However I was hoping there might be a keystroke shortcut that I could hold down while I drag to achieve the same effect (i.e. drag video only or audio only when the key is held down and I’m dragging from viewer to timeline, or from viewer to the canvas window dropzone).
It would be handy if this existed as it’s irritating to have to look to the timeline, click off each individual audio patch (at least on avid they were brightly coloured and you could just run your mouse down them and they would all switch off with one swipe). Apple’s interface is blander, and you’re forced to click each individual channel (crappier if you’re working with formats that have 4 tracks of audio).
cheers

February 12, 2012 at 4:06 pmThis thread was good….but I want to know if there is any keystroke I can do to break apart an audio or visual track? (More to the point, I’d like what the original quesion was, which is a keystroke for just inserting one or the other, but, baring that, a keystroke to disconnect the destination marker from the track will do….)

July 12, 2012 at 4:13 pmGetting old!!!
Had cerebral flatulence and “forgot” how simple the FCP interface allows you to insert audio or video by itself.
I’ve been working around by going to end of clip and inserting A&V. Then cutting the video then sliding my audio into place on the separate track.
Thanks for shaking out the cobwebs.
