  • Exporting or saving clip and logging information in FCE

    Hi.

I use FCE (haven’t been inspired to put down the other $1000 yet :-).

The biggest pain for me is the lack of a librarian feature for saving clip and logging information. My primary workflow is HDV 30p record using Cannon HV30 SD tapes. Then firewire to MBP (w/external FW800 drives) as SD ana. to keep the size reasonable. I use capture now 63 minutes (my projects are 90 minutes spanning two tapes +/-).

I used to add markers to the master clip and create subclips, but since I can’t use any of that information for cataloging the tapes, etc…, I just mark in/out and drag to the sequence with transitions. Some days only a few major edits, other days a few dozen. I add titles, etc. and then export a complete quicktime. I then use episode to create downloadable wmv and m4v. Quick and simple, generally :-).

I will probably keep the .fcp’s forever and the tapes forever, but do not intend on keeping anything else for longer than six months to a year.

I have purchased idive and tried it a little bit, but I don’t want that much video saved (I will probably use it for family stuff), and it makes my workflow a little more complicated.

It would really be helpful to have something that would read the .fcp file and create a documentation or library log, or somehow plug in to the application that would let me export the clips/markers, etc… to use as a tape catalog. Simplicity and reusability would be key (good xml format that can be imported, for example. also nice looking documentation).

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

(BTW, great forums. I really appreciate the quality of the answers and interactions here. This site has really helped an old-fashioned audio guy start moving into the HD world. Thanks!)

Not sure about FCE, but can you export batch lists? I have a feeling you need FCP for that, but maybe…?

There is no batch export function or batch logging function or XML export in FCE. You can of course use the browser columns to log information in a searchable database. You can of course save the FCE project files, which aren’t large and will give you access to the data you need. You could combine multiple FCE projects into a single project file which would keep all the data in one searchable location. It’s not as ideal as a spreadsheet but it might work for you.

    All the best,

    Tom
