  • Exporting Video w/Alpha Channel

I’m having difficulty exporting a chroma key with an alpha channel which I’ll ultimately turn into a Flash with alpha. I’m using FCP to export thru Compressor – selecting the Animation NTSC Alpha codec. An earlier post here for a user with a similar problem said the Animation codec should be switched from millions of colors, to millions of color PLUS. Isn’t that what the Animation NTSC Alpha codec is? I learned only Millions+ can carry the alpha channel. ? Thanks!

I take it this isn’t working for you. You don’t say what happens when you export, but I’m guessing you’re getting black where the alpha is. Is that right? If so make sure you don’t render the video before you export it. When you export in the QT Conversion module you’ll see unrendered. If you render you’re exporting the render file, so if you’re working in a format that doesn’t carry alpha, like DV (is that what you’re working in) then the alpha is lost.

    All the best,

Working in NTSC SD. And yes – seeing black where the Alpha should be. I’ll look for the unrendered in the QT Conversion module. Should I still look for a millions+ setting in FCP’s Animation with Alpha codec? That’s what I’ve used when doing this trick in After Effects – to carry the alpha. Regular ole millions (no +) doesn’t work.

    Tnx

Tom – thanks – exporting thru the QT Conversion module worked fine. I’d been trying to get it done sending it thru Compressor. Now I just need to go back and make progressive videos to start with – to get rid of the interlacing. But we’re on the way!

Is it possible to get it to work through compressor? Do I have to somehow unrender my timeline? I am working in XDCAM which is HD but no alpha channel, I can get it to work in QT conversion but I neeed to do it in compressor for this project. Should I move my work into an animation timeline?

You seem like the one to ask.

    How shall I proceed?

    Thanks
