  • MacBook Pro editing system PRE SALES Question – money no option

Posted by Kaito Tanno on April 15, 2008 at 4:12 am

I have the current Macbook Pro 15″ 2.5Ghz.

I want to input the digibeta project I have in at the highest possible quality and be able to play back on an external monitor (23″ cinema display). What I/O device would suit best? Ideally would like a device that I can use with HD 1080 HDCAM SR projects in the future, this is the only digibeta project I will be handling. I am renting a deck for each project.

I guess what I am asking is, what is the best set up for editing on a MacBook Pro, external drives (raid?) and I/O device. I want to view at 1080 on all future projects but will not be doing any color corrections at this stage. Also is there any disadvantage quality wise using a MBP as opposed to a MacPro apart from the obvious processing power.

If someone with experience that has a few minutes perhaps they would also be so kind to list the ideal MacPro editing system.

Although I listed money is no option, the budget excluding Mac and cinema displays is approx $10K. I want to go shopping. Thank s for your help.

The Io HD, which handles ProRes and DVCPro HD since you can edit uncompressed HD on a MacBook Pro anyway. If you want to edit HDCAM SR projects, especially if they are true 4:4:4, then you need a Mac Pro with an AJA Kona 3 board.

Yeah, you’re limited to compressed formats only and the renders will be much slower.

Ideal system is a Mac Pro, AJA Kona 3, very fast SATA array like the MaxxDigital EVO HD model. 500MB/s in RAID 5. And add a proper HD monitor.

    Dear Walter

Thank you for your replay, I have decide to get a Kona 3, Mac Pro 2 x 23″ cinema displays and an AJA HDP connected to a Sony Bravia for playback only.

I think internal drives will be ok for this digibeta project speed wise. Will add an external raid and Colour correction monitor for the next project.

    Thanks again Kai
