  Timecode not captured

  Attempting one capture of a 60-minute, MiniDV tape, the capture was halted for an alleged timecode break around 9 minutes into the tape. Stopped tape, cued tape backwards a few seconds, engaged capture, played tape (through FCE), and continued capture. 51 minutes later, after completion, the timecode began at 00:00 to start the second capture, not at 9:09, the timecode at the point of the restart. Played taped through the point of the alleged break and there was no visible timecode or video or audio break.

  Second attempt to start capturing from well after the point of the first alleged break yielded same result – FCE no longer reading timecode from the tape, merely starting timecode at 00:00, despite the fact that the timecode on the actual tape is 10:10.

  Just tried a different tape that was recorded one year ago with the same result.

  Also tried a different firewire cable with same result.

  And just tried different tapes in a Panasonic AG-DVC60 for playback with the same result.

  So the same result – timecode starting from 00:00 using Capture/Now with different tapes, cables and cameras. The timecode is read correctly when just playing the tape through FCE, but once capture begins, every clip captured begins with 00:00 timecode.

  Like a bad dream or a cloud of fog, I’ve just reviewed several of the over 40 projects done in the last year and found that none of the clips captured ever retained the timecode from the DV tape, and this is confirmed in the Brenneis book. I have no idea why this reality has chosen now to baffle me.

  The task remains, though, to edit portions of a 60-minute tape with the number of logged clips too numerous for start-and-stop capture. Because tape timecode began at 00:00:00:00, my only guess is to capture the entire tape from start/00, which should closely match the 00-start timecode FCE will assign to the 60-minute clip once capture is complete. Again, I have NO idea why this feature is just dawning on me after 12 months of working with FCE, and I apologize for wasting the time of generous readers.
