  Trouble capturing video from Digital 8

  Can anyone help me figure out why I’m not able to capture video from my Digital 8 Sony DCR-TRV340 camcorder via firewire? My computer is recognizing the camcorder on firewire and I’m able to see the video in the Log & Capture window. However, when I select Capture Now, a black window opens up with “Final Cut Pro” in the middle and copy at the bottom of the window that says “Waiting for Timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled.” I have my camcorder on VCR mode, so I believe my device is enabled. Any help would be appreciated.

  Sounds like the camcorder’s tape-function is not being “controlled” by FCP.

  Try this:
  Under the “Capture Settings”
  Switch the FCP Device Control preset to “FireWire Basic” (or “FireWire NTSC.”)

  Try each one and see what happens.

  If still no joy…
  Switch the FCP Device Control preset to “Non-Controllable device” then, just manually hit PLAY on the camcorder and press “Capture Now” on FCP.

  This should capture the audio and video and timecode into FCP, but without FCP controlling the camcorder.

  Don’t know why the camcorder is not responding to FCP control.

  Trash the FCP Preferences and then try the two DV capture settings again.

  Thanks. I tried your suggestions but now my computer is not recognizing the camcorder via firewire. I connected a MiniDV camera with firewire and my computer does recognize it so I know the firewire is working. It must be something with the camcorder. Could I have changed a setting on the Digital8 that caused the problem? Or is my firewire port on the digital8 bad and if so, how can I test that?

  You could have set a menu item incorrectly on the camcorder.

  If there is a choice that says “A/V iLink Out” (or similar) try swtiching it on or off and re-try after each change.

  To test if the FW connection is working.

  Get a FW cable with the mini 4-cond plug (camcorder plug) on each end, and hook two camcorders together (DV and Digital 8 will be fine.)

  When you play one, its output should show up on the other camera via the FW.
