  Rendering

  Hello,

  Have FCP 6 with a Dual Quad Mac Pro, 8 GB Ram.

  I have a program with 2 alpha channels, 6 stills with movement (scale and position), 4 picts with Alpha with movement and scaling, 4 titles that scale into position, stereo music and voice over track. The problem is i can’t get real time previews without having to continue rendering everytime the client makes a minor change. We have the AJA Kona Card. Shoudn’t this give the real time capabilities? What is the solution?

  Stills in the photoshop format or animation codec will always need rendering before output.

  You could also turn on dynamic RT.

  The Kona cards do not offer hardware acceleration for any of these types of effects. They are all handled by the MAC processor.

  The Kona only gives you some help with certain codecs.

  Is there a way to nest the layers so that we can achieve real-time preview?

  the only way to achieve RT is by setting up RT in your timeline so that there is no longer a render. This will allow you to work in draft mode or resolutions and see FX.

  The other thing is to plan the workflow so that the things that you are importing match thte codec you are working in.

  If I’m doing the math correctly…you have 12 layers with motion/animation? and you want constant realtime playback?
  I think you’re beyond the realtime capabilities of most edit systems, even for DV. I’m sure it’s not taking that long to render, but I do understand the frustration.
  The problem is that even though you only change one value on one layer, it changes the ENTIRE composite that FCP is doing, so of course it will need to re-render everything.

  Some edit systems will have a ‘processing heirarchy’ which will allow them to only ‘process (same as rendering)’ the layers that are above the changes. It’s very cool.

  The way you can achieve a similar workflow would be to ‘lock’ down the layers that you don’t need to change and create a movie/still of that composite, therefore cutting down on your total layers.
