QUICKTIME FILE FOR E-MAIL
I usually e-mail files of small projects – under 10 minutes in length – as Windows Media Video files, since most clients use PCs to approve projects and sometimes freak out when they receive a Quicktime file. These files are pretty small – under 10mb – which is important, since my e-mail provider won’t allow attachments over 10mb. However, because of their size and resolution, the quality isn’t that great, but it doesn’t have to be that great since this is just a quick approval copy, and not the final, high-res version.
However, one client has requested a Quicktime file for a project segment no longer than 4 minutes and 30 seconds in length.
After two hours of experimenting, the smallest file size I have been able to achieve using Quicktime conversion has been 51.7mb. This was achieved through H.261, least quality, single-pass and 176×144 resolution.
Will a setup featuring FCE HD 3.5.1 allow me to squeeze this file any smaller with options I have yet to discover or use?

Sending a 4 minute video in a 10MB file isn’t a great option. I’d suggest you start looking into ftp options or other websites that will let you upload files for others to download.

Yes, one of my contractors DOES have several FTP sites that I have been able to use in the past. With no practical e-mail options available, this was the last option. I actually ended up just mailing a DVD to this client and all was well. But the important thing I learned was that Quicktime files do have a compression limit, and I was able to discover what the limit is.
