importing text for roll problem
Posted by Rob Maloney on April 2, 2007 at 4:11 amHi Folks,
Just tried to import a long credit list that I made in word, saved as a txt. file. Saved it to the hard drive, and when I tried to import it, received the message:
file error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.
Any advice? It is a long roll with over 100 names and addresses and I’d hate to do it manually. Many thanks in advance!

Many, many thanks. If I can ask one more question, as a FCP newbie, I’ve never used Boris in FCP, always Live Type or just the text tool. Any hints or advise?
Thanks for the timely response. Much appreciated.

April 4, 2007 at 12:21 amI would completely avoid the text tool. I actually completely avoid rolls as a rule. They are very difficult to execute in any program, including AE and FCP. Here is why:
It has to do with interlaced video. If the roll is not a specific time and the characters are not falling on the correct fields it is almost impossible to do a proper credit ROLL. You should experiment with the crawl feature in Boris to see if it your specific roll and timing is going to give you headaches. I ahd a roll a few months agao that was almost impossible to execute and it looked awful no matter what I did. I had a combination of characters lines and speed that just sis not work well with interlaced video.
If you can do it in cards then I would suggest cards.

I agree, rolls are a clammy thing; very tough to pull off well. In general I try to avoid them. In this instance, instead of using a black background, I used a mix of moving backgrounds composited with a variety of footage behind the text, so there was enough going on to kind of hide the limitations of the roll. Still, all in all, it isn’t a pretty sight to the experienced eye.
Thanks much for your time and expertise.

April 4, 2007 at 4:46 pmWhile extremely difficult, I’ve had the best luck using two different methods.
First, build the text in photoshop and then scroll the file in Final Cut Pro. Go slow though!!!!
Second, using After Effects 7. We did a test and AE7 looked a lot better than AE6.5 for some reason. Go slow though.
Even with these methods, you still really need to work it.
In general, I completely avoid FCP titles for all but the simplest things. In my opinion, AE or Motion do a superior job.
