Help with min. computer config for FCP 5.1.2 – yikes!
Well, not Yikes, but Sawtooth AGP PowerMac3.1 …
Have used this for ages, it has a Sonnet 1GHz CPU upgrade in it, 1.75GB RAM 100MHz bus speed, OS10.4.8, QT7.1.3, FCP 5.1.2, ATI Radeon 8500, has worked well on all DV SD footage so far.BUT
HDV 1080i60…
Captured and logged 30 hours onto my LaCie d2 Extreme 500GB FW800 drive just fine, plays back clips in the Viewer just fine.
On the Canvas, however, I have dropped frames galore. Sometimes.
So I surfed away, trashed preferences, reset user preferences, cut system playback tolerances way down, turned off all but 2 audio tracks – still dropped frames.
Bought an SIIG FW800 card and sidestepped the FW400s entirely.
No difference – no dependable playback. So…
Sonnet Encore Dual 1.8GHz upgrade on the G4?
Single processor G5 1.8 or 2GHz?
Dual Processor G5 dual 1.8 or 2GHz?Which is the lowest cost machine here that will function and let me finish this job?
Apparently Apple’s minimumn of G4 with 1GHz and 1GB RAM for HDV is, let’s say, a little optimistic.
Yes, I know, eventually the Kona/PCIe route necessitates some kind of G5. I know about craigslist and eBay too.
What I’d like to know is this: is anybody successfully editing basic HDV programs (21 minutes long from 30 hours of tape) on a G4 of whatever variation?
Or is everybody only on G5s?And if so, will a single CPU G5 do the trick? Or does it have to be a dual?
And finally, does anybody in the Los Angeles area have one of these minimal machines for sale? Gotta finish this gig and I’m out of time and money!
Thanks!
Cheers
Chris
