  • Allocating Disk Space before capture on FCE

i am working on a simple thing at home for a buddy. using FCE for convenience at home. i have one of those new western digital “mybook” drives which is just your regular consumer firewire drive. i usually use a lacie disk but as this is a large project, the new 500GB drive seemed like it needed to leave its little box and make a home on my desk. i go to capture now, and all of a sudden, it wants to “allocate disk space” for about 15 minutes before it starts capturing, so at this point, i am missing the first 15 or so minutes of the tape. i plugged in a lacie disk just to see how that would work and it didnt need to “allocate” this space, it started right up like it’s supposed to. i COULD transfer the data from the lacie disk to the mybook WD drive but id rather return the drive if it’s a drive problem. anyone familiar with this problem and have a solution?

for the Mac, it was the first and only computer i put it on. it eventually captures, but like i said, about 15 minutes later. i did a little research, and it seems a lot of FCP editors have problems with this drive. luckily i got it from costco and they’ll take anything back. still, if anyone has a solution, let me know
