  Newbie question on FCP HD 4.5 and upgrades

  Hi,

  I’m new to FCP, and need to find out some info to help my company decide on whether we need to upgrade our system.

  Currently, we are running FCP HD 4.5 on Dual 2GB Power Mac G5 (OS X Ver 10.3.9)in our edit suite.

  We will be shooting a project for about a month and are considering digitising the rushes to a MacBook (Intel) while on location to view and do a rough offline cut. Beside doing a rough offline cut on the MacBook on location, we intend to continue the edit back at our edit suite when the shoot is over.

  1) Universal version
  I was told I would need the universal version of FCP to use on the MacBook. Is there a universal version of FCP HD 4.5 , or is the only FCP 5.1 universal ?

  2) If I need to use FCP 5.1 on the MacBook on location, would I be able to open the project files with FCP HD 4.5 on the Power Mac back at the edit suite to continue editing? Or would I need to upgrade the edit suite FCP 5.1 as well?

  3) If I upgrade to FCP 5.1 on the Power Mac, I read that I need to upgrade the OS from 10.3.9 to 10.4.4 and also Quicktime 7.0.4. Do I need to get Quicktime Pro or do I just need to download free Quicktime player?

  4) Crossgrade and Upgrade
  I read on the Apple website about Crossgrade and Upgrade to universal version. What is a crossgrade and how would this apply to us (running FCP HD 4.5)? Is there a crossgrade to a universal version of FCP 4.5 (hence my question 1 above)?

  5) By the way, does FCP HD 4.5 support HD 1080i50 ?

  Sorry for some many questions, appreciate any info on this.

  1) Only 5.1 or later are universal.

  2) Both machines would need to be be running the same version.

  3) The correct version of QuickTime will come with the OS. QuickTime Pro comes with FCP.

  4) A crossgrade means you have to send in the discs from the earlier version. See above.

  5) No.

  The use of FCP is not supported by Apple on the MacBook, only on the MacBook Pro.
