  I need help understanding the Easy Setup and Sequence Settings

  I am certainly a Novice when it comes to Video Editing or Shooting. I admit that up front.

  I am working at trying to understand and become better with FCP and DVDSP. I use them mainly for my own “Home” videos but now and then, I do make videos for others, at their request, and only after they understand I am not a Pro, will do my best but do not guarantee the outcome. (I just don’t want anyone hurt because the video was not what they had envisioned.)

  There is something I am a bit confused about and maybe I am doing it right but I need to double check with those of you who obviously know far more than I do.

  When I export a Sequence to my hard drive for the purpose of making a DVD, I presently have the Sequence Settings set for:

  Frame Size: 720×480 NTSC DV (3:2)
  Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC – CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)

  This is set automatically when I choose Easy Setup DV-NTSC

  Now here is the confusing part for me. When I go to make a DVD in DVDSP, the aspect ratio is 4:3 and yet I am trying to bring in video with 3:2. To a Novice this seems wrong but I am not sure.

  I notice that in the Sequence Settings of FCP I did have an option of setting the frame size with NTSC 4:3 and I am wondering if I should be choosing that option for output.

  I did ask this question in another forum and the only response was to put the Setting in Sequence Settings to NTSC 4:3 which then makes my viewer 640×480 and I have to reset a lot of the Live Type work I had imported.

  I am really confused in that when I bring in one of the lessons from the Apple Pro Training Series Final Cut Pro, their sequence settings are the same as I presently use:

  Frame Size: 720×480 NTSC DV (3:2)
  Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC – CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)

  I find it hard to believe that they would have the wrong settings but I am just confused.

  Could someone please help me to understand?

  The FCP designation of 3:2 is confusing. They’re the same. The material is actually 4:3. There are no 3:2 television sets. All the 3:2 designation means is that the pixel aspect ratio does not conform to square pixels generating a 4:3 image. A better designation would be

  Frame Size: 720×480 NTSC DV (4:3)
  Pixel Aspect: NTSC CCIR601 DV (0.9)

  Tom,
  Thanks so much…I was doing it right after all. I have and have worked through several of your books and your footage was also the same settings as other manuals. Now I feel more comfortable.

  Your books were a great help in my learning curve. Thank you.
