  Basic question — Can I just plug a microphone into the back of my Mac and record audio?

  Hi ~

  I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question.

  Can I plug a microphone (and what type — with power or without?) into the back of my Mac G-4 (where exactly?) and then record my voice into, say, Soundtrack? And if I want to do a voiceover for my video project in FCP 4.0, how do I do that? Cannot find the info in the manual.

  Not if it does not have an input specifically marked for a microphone (a “line input” will not work.)

  You can buy a USB audio adapter (Griffin iMic, for example) and plug a dynamic or small “electret condenser” (battery-operated) Mic into that.

  Another method is to plug a Mic into a camcorder or deck, and feed that into the Mac with FW.

  I think the BEST method is to connect the mic to a camcorder or deck and first RECORD your VO onto a TAPE, and then capture it like any other clip.
  That way, you can SAVE the tape, and it will have Timecode on it for future reference.
