I’m trying to do some basic editing with FCP 5 which involves taking some film shot in DV-PAL and mixing in some animation which was rendered into Pixlet video.

I didn’t know what I was doing so I dumped the clips into the timeline and assumed that when I hit export that FCP would somehow know that since my animations were in Pixlet and the film was in DV-Pal and the output choice was the same as the film clips that all it would do is re-encode the animations and it would passthrough the film. Since the animations were short, it would be done in about 10 minutes I thought.

Imagine my surprise to find a 3 hour+ wait time popping up. It was obviously re-encoding the entire 1.5 hour film.

Reading the manual, I discovered that to avoid this happenening, you should make sure imported clips are the same format as the other media and output. Sure enough, after removing the Pixlet-based clips, the export took less than 10 mins. So I decided to encode the animations separately into DV-PAL.

Then came another shock. After starting the encoding for a mere 3 minute animation, the wait time appeared at around 10 minutes. I checked the activity monitor to investigate. It said that FCP was using about 10-15% of my CPUs and 75-80% of my machine was sitting idle. Now it showed the process had 17-20 threads open but still FCP was only using about half of one processor worth of power. When I converted the file using quicktime itself, it took under a minute but quicktime doesn’t give me the same options for pixel aspect ratio as FCP.

Why is this happening? I don’t want to have a
