my video transitions accidentally got switched off.
Hello, I’m a new member to the Cow. It’s a great site.
I was editing my video and accidentally clicked with my mouse up around the effects and sequence buttons and disabled my video effects options.I was not aware that this had happened until I tried to add a transition and a message popped up. Now when I want to add any video transition, I receive the message,”operation not allowed”. I’ve searched through my fcp manual and another book on the subject by Jerry Hoffman, but to no avail. What and where do I go to enable my video transitions?
I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

To get your Effects tab back in your browser…
Window > Effects or Command – 5.
You were most likely dragging your transitions from this window to your timeline. I’m not sure why you were getting and “operation not allowed” message when you tried to work around your Effects Tab disappearance.
There are a few things that can go wrong when trying to add transitions, like not having sufficient handles on the clips or not having the play head positioned at the transition point. I don’t think these were your issue.
Go back to your previous workflow and see if the problem persists. If you want to do some independent reading go to Help > Final Cut Pro User Manual. Type transitions in the search field. The most relevant stuff starts at ll-375. If none of this solves the problem, write back.

I followed the instructions as you indicated and sadly, nothing happened. So, I decided to re-read the instructions to see if I missed anything.
You mentioned clicking and dragging the transition to the timeline. I actually added transitions another way. I just highlighted the transition of choice and clicked.
So I decided to try your way. I opened the effects folder and clicked and dragged the transition to the timeline and presto, it worked. A transition was born again.
I still cannot access the transitions via the effects tab in the browser. I still get the message”operation not allowed”.
My friend suggested to me that perhaps the fact that some of my clips had been rendered may have effected the outcome. I do not however remember formally rendering the specific clips I was working with.
I adjusted the speed and a green line showed up on the top of the timeline. Now as I look at the same clips in my project the line has turned blue. Can rendering have affected my ability to add video transitions, as odd as this sounds?
In any case, thank you for your help. I am glad that I can resume my editing. My cousin, I’m sure, will appreciate receiving her wedding video sooner rather than later. Sincerly, Ms. Beetch. -
Rendering the clips will make no difference. Operation not allowed can happen if there are not enough handles for the transition, or if there is a track conflict. There may be other reasons. The FCP error message are notorious vague and cryptic.
