  • Recommended AGP Graphics card for Final Cut Express on my iMac G5

Posted by Karl Seidel on January 15, 2006 at 6:23 am

    Hi All,

I’m a newbie to FCE and I just got an iMac G5. Now I need to get an AGP Graphics card for Final Cut Express to use in my iMac G5.

I’d appreciate any suggestions as to type of AGP Graphics card I should get and where you recommend I buy it from. I live in Los Angeles.

    Thank you!

Hm… What kind of iMac/Graphics card do you think you currently have?

If you’re trying to install FCP 4.x on one of the new PCIe iMacs, just search the posts.

    Hi Gunleik,

I may have jumped the gun. After I installed FCE I got a message saying that I have missing hardware/software. I checked System Profiler and it said there that I have an ATI Radeon X600 XT installed. So, I did a restart of the G5, ran Disk Utility and checked again. Same message: Configuration Error: This software requires certain software or hardware which is missing – AGP graphics card.

Anyway, I re-installed FCE and restarted and I’m still getting the same message. Bad Mac? Bad User? I don’t know! I’m just trying to use FCE.

    Thanks!

If this is FCE3 you need to get the update to 3.0.1. This is specifically for PCIe iMacs and G5s.

If you have an older version of FCE there is a hack to change the graphics card requirement https://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/final_cut_pro_on_old_macs.html

    All the best,

Thank you Tom! I downloaded the latest update but it’s incompatible with my PowerPC G5. I bought this iMac Xmas eve – so it’s not the one with the new chip. I’ve been using iMovie successfully and I’ve also tested the graphics card by running Nanosaur – which is very graphics-intensive. I guess I’ll have to call Melrose Mac (where I bought the machine) and see if they have any ideas.

    Thanks again!

If you have that Radeon, you do not have an AGP slot.

The update should work, but if it doesn’t the xlr8yourmac hack seems to work for most. (Have not tried that for myself).

What is the bug report with the update?

There has been reported quite a lot of trouble with the latest Quicktime (7.04). So much that Apple has provided us with a de-installer. (just a probably way off hunch…)
Which version of system/qt/FCE are you trying to piece together?

    Good luck!

    Hi Tom,

Changing AGP to PCI worked! Thank you!

The update is for version 3 only. Is that not what you’re using? That’s the currently available version.

    All the best,
