  25fps Sony FS7 footage in a 24fps Alexa Project?

  Hi all,

  I’m working on a film at the moment. The first days rushes were shot @ 25fps on a Sony FS7 at 4k. The rest of the film is being shot on an Alexa XT @ 24fps.

  I was wondering about best workflow for the edit.
  Everything is being transcoded to ProRES Proxy 422 @ 24fps.
  If I use Cinematools on the proxy files to change the fps to 24, I’m worried that when we come to the online the EDL’s/XML’s will cause problems for the grade.

  All the 25fps footage is MOS montage footage.
  Any thoughts about this would be greatly appreciated.

  conforming will not be a problem.

  did you shoot RAW or ProRes?
  if ProRes, then simply conform those camera originals before striking your edit media.
  if RAW… well i don’t know about that.

  could be you need to set the TC rate on those clips to “24@25”

  talk to your post house,
  a few simple tests might be in order
  but i don’t see it being too much of a problem.

  Thanks for getting back to me Nick.

  The FS7 material (which is 25fps) has been shot using Sony’s MXF file format. Everything else that is 24fps has been shot ProRES 444 3.2k.

  If I created ProRES 444 files from the MXFs, then conformed them in Cinematools and then created the edit proxys from those new masters; could that be a solution?

  sorry, i overlooked those details first time around.
  yes, that’s a very good approach.

  once you’ve made the new masters make sure they are backed up.

  one last thing, well 2 actually.

  your new 4444 masters should also be 4k
  im sure you intend this, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it.

  but manly: ProRes proxy?
  consider ProResLT
  it’s a very sweet spot between quality and file size.
  Proxy looks noticeably poor,
  LT looks pretty good, and makes for great screenings.

  i’ve cut quite a few features using LT.

  Do not conform in CinemaTools. Conform inside FCP. Then FCP will be able to keep track of the original 25 fps TC.
