Recently Upgraded Computer, FCP 7 still exports super slow.
So I just upgraded my Imac 27″ (Late 2012) from 8gbs of ram to 32gbs.
I was hoping this would fix my FCP7 export issues but guess what, its still slow as hell.Like for an export of a 2 hour edit it takes around 12 hours.
I just want to get this thing going faster but i dont know what to do.
Ive tried exporting directly through FCP7, and sending to compressor.Does anyone have any ideas?

The only thing that speeds up exports are processor speeds. Unless you are exporting to H.264, then there are a handful of hardware add-ons that help. Like the Elgato Turbo264. Use their presets, and it’ll speed things up a lot. There are other converter options, but they won’t work with the iMac.
RAM helps very little with conversion speed. It helps with apps that crave RAM….FCP doesn’t. It tops out at 4GB. Compressor doesn’t use much either. You can see if enabling QMASTER will help. But that requires a 4 core machine or better. Is your iMac a quad core machine?

im using 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5 which i believe is only dual core.
Can you tell me more about this elgato turbo 264! what is it?is buying a better processor for my machine even doable on a mac? if so is it worth it?

Ugh…looks like they no longer make the Turbo264. And no, you cannot upgrade a processor on a Mac. Only way to get better processor is to buy new machine. Apple’s great marketing ploy.

Well, there goes my suggestion for transcoding footage to ProRes to help with export times. 😉

I second Andrew, export first the same codec you sued on your TL, meaning in ProRes. Then drop the finished export in Compressor and take it there to H.264.
It will go faster, you have more control and easier over the settings, and in my experience it also looks better.Greetings,
