  How to crop clips without messing up aspect ratio/widescreen

  I feel like a complete amateur not knowing how to do this, but I used to be able to. How do I crop a clip in final cut pro and have the aspect ratio/widescreen bars in the canvas stay as is rather than get covered up by the shot? When I used to do this the clip would crop UNDERNEATH the widescreen bars and cover up what I’m trying to hide. I can’t remember how to do this. HELP!!
