  • A question about Round-trip between FCP 7 and DaVinci Resolve

Posted by Hongwei Li on May 23, 2014 at 3:20 pm

    Hi everyone!
    I have a question.
I export a XML from FCP 7 to Davinci Resolve 10.
then , color grading and export another FCP XML Round-trip from Davinci and import to FCP 7 again.
then , the FCP automatically create a new sequence named “XXXX(Resolve)”.
    everything seems ok.
    But!!
    my question is …..
can I edit the clip in this sequence named “XXXX(Resolve)” ?
maybe Extend or shorten a clip
    please somebody tell me.
    thanks very much.

[Dave LaRonde] “Duplicate the sequence created by Resolve. Play around with trimmingthe clip, moving it, copying & pasting it…. see what happens.”

    mmmm…..
I try it but nothing happened.
maybe I have a wrong expression about this question.
    let me detail it more.

my boss ask me find a solution
he edit the video using FCP 7.
and he hope can color grading some clip duration the edit.
then , looking the result about color grading in FCP 7 .
whether the result is ok or not ok , continually edit using the modified sequence ,
    maybe Extend or shorten clip.

    so…
I export a XML from FCP 7 to Davinci Resolve 10.
in Davinci Resolve 10 , no edit clip , no extend , no shorten , just color grading then export a XML round-trip.
finish the render , created a XML and many edited .mov (shorter then sources) files by Davinci.
then , go back to FCP 7 and import the XML exporting from Davinci.
FCP will automatically create a new sequence named “XXXX(Resolve)”.
so , there are two sequence in my project.
one is the originally sequence (named A) , the other one is color grading sequence (named B) from Davinci.
if I want to extend a clip one of all clips in the B sequence.
    is it allow ?
if not , how should I do ? or It’s impossible.
    please give me some suggestion
    Thanks very much.

When you render in Resolve, you need to render with handles (extra material on the head and tail of your shot). There is an option to turn on in the Delivery page inside of Resolve.

When you import that XML from Resolve, you will have ability to extend/slip shots in the timeline; up to the amount of handles that were rendered.

I usually render 15 frame handles; but you may need more depending on how much you need to tweak the edit.
