  • Alternatives to AI for Invigorator?

Posted by David Oulashian on April 27, 2005 at 10:42 pm

    Hi,

I just got the Zaxworks Invigorator Classic Plugin. Now I am realizing that it only works with AI files. I have AE 6.0Pro, Photoshop 7, PremPro 1.0 and EncoreDVD. Is there any way for me to use the Invigorator plugin for my own text without having to purchase Illustrator? I really don’t want to have to purchase and learn another program just to access the Invig plugin . . .

    Help!

Panopticum has an alternative called Anima Text. I used the demo and it seemed fairly easy to use however, I think their customer service is lacking. Check it out. https://panopticum.com/ae/animatext3d/animatext3d.shtml

    HI Steve,

My hope is that there is some way for me to use InvigClassic with the software that I already own . . .

(eg: maybe Photoshop has a secret way to output vector files that Invig can use, or some solution like that . . . 😉

In Photoshop under the FILE menu you can choose to EXPORT PATHS TO ILLUSTRATOR. The resulting file can be opened in Invigorator.

Thanks John, just what I was hoping. I confess, though, not having used paths much, when I open the AI file in Invig it gives me the following error:

“There were no usable vector paths in this file”

What I have been doing is creating a text layer in Photoshop, then I have tried:
    Layer>Type>Create Work Path
    or
    Layer>Type>Convert to Shape
    or
    Layer>Add Vector Mask>Reveal All

but none of these seems to give me any usable mask. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

I used the Convert to Shape option which seems to import fine. Which version of Invigorator are you using?

    Hi John,

Thanks for the quick response. I will try this tonight when I get home.

I am using the Invig plugin that came with AE6.0Pro (not in front of it right now but I think it was ver 3.something).

    Thanks again,

    Hi John,

I tried as you suggested and it still gives me the same error:

There were no usable vector paths in this file

I am using Photoshop 7, AE 6.0Pro and Invig Classic 3.0.3.

When I apply the InvigClassic effect and get to the open dialog box, select the Photoshop file to which I “exported paths to Illustrator”, the thumbnail appears blank. However if I try to select an AI file that came with Total Training, the thumbnail appears properly and it seems to open fine by Invig??? Any other ideas?

Are you by chance using Invig Pro instead of Classic?

    Thanks for you help.

In photoshop you need to CTRL click your layer, then click on the paths tab. Then at the the bottom of the paths window there is a little icon that if you highlight it, it says “make work path from selection” After you click on it, it will create a workpath. Then export “paths to illustrator” under the file menu. To import it into AE you need to create a new solid, apply invigorator to that solid, it will then ask you to select your illustrator file, do so, and then check the “open as layers” check box, this will make the middle parts of letters appear correctly. Good luck.

I’m using Invigorator Pro 4.0.4. But I don’t think that is the issue. As the previous post suggested, you have to make sure you actually have a “path” in the file – which I assumed you did… You can always email me the file (john@motionworks.com.au) and I can check it out for you on my system.

    Hi David,
You need version 3.0.6 and up to make it work as fare as I remember.
Best you download the latest version of Invigorator classic or even better you upgrade to v. 4.0 then you will be able to type your text directly in Invigorator.
Also when using the Photoshop method it is very important that you use the open as layers option so letters like “O”… concerve their holes.

If you are still having problems exporting or importing your text let us know and one of us could send you a file with your text typed in IL to get you going for now.

    Salut.
    Serge
