I’ve got an idea that a client and I talked about but I’m not sure where to start. I’ll explain it and what I’m planning to do, please let me know if I’m heading in the right direction on this.

The idea is to be traveling down a road in AE using an animated camera. Then stop and look over at a billboard sign. At that time, we’ll flash to white and go full frame with video of a horse park thats advertised on the sign. Then we’ll flash to white again and appear traveling back on the road and stop at another sign, repeating this process 4 times.

He wants it to be simple and nice but not chessy. The road will be a psd/tiff layer and it will sit on a psd/tiff of a map. (the map will act as the ground, I guess.) The skyline will just be a tiff or a video. Then we’ll sit different billboards in 3d space and animate the camera to move towards them.

I just wanted to see how some of you guys would tackle this idea and if I’m headed in the right direction. Hopefully I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew!! lol
    Thanks ahead of time.

Find copies of Angie Taylor’s After Effects books. She has great tutorials on the subject of just this kind of thing. It’s a bit more difficult that you might to get a good illusion but it’s a lot of fun, too.

theanvel.com has a nice set of tutorials on working in 3d spaces like hallways and rooms. Used to be free but they’re worth the expense.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    those are both great tutorials.

You can also get rid of the Point of Interest and have the camera turn based on the motion path (the position of the camera over time) by selecting the camera and choosing Layer > Transform > Auto Orient, and set it from “Point of Interest” to “Orient along Path.”

When a layer orients along it’s motion path it faces the front of the layer towards the current direction it’s moving. So as the path curves, the camera turns.

You can use the rotation and orientation properties to add additional rotation animation.
