Premiere Pro XML to Final Cut Pro with C300 footage
I’m delivering shots I made with the C300 to the editor. I was asked to trim the shots to save the editor some time. I work in Premiere CS5, she does work in FCP. Now, the XML route from premiere to FCP seems pretty straightforward. But since MXF files from the C300 have to be downloaded trough a Transfer program in FCP, I was wondering if this would cause any trouble in the workflow. For instance; does the relocating of the footage become an issue? Any tips or thoughts are welcome!

which files do you get from FCP, because the native mpeg2 files from the C300 are non editing files in FCP. Normally you have to transcode the C300 files with mpeg streamclip for use in FCP. Premiere shouldn’t have a problem with the workflow. So you can use the FCP files in Premiere and send back a XML so she can work on.

You have to transcode the C300 files first then import the ProRes files in Premiere. Then you can deal with it in FCP.

That is true. And note that they are in the MXF format…

NO no no no no no! Get the Canon C300 Log and Transfer Plugin and use Log and Transfer…that’s helps FCP track the footage. External converters ONLY when all other solutions fail. I’ve L&T’d lots of footage from the C300 into FCP.
But in other respects you are right. Jorrit, you cannot use PPro 5.5 to prep anything for FCP. FCP won’t work with the files natively, where PPro can. You won’t be able to save the editor any time with PPro. If anything, it will add time. Sorry.

Shane, have you tried the Calibrated{Q} MXF Import for OSX?
I purchased and installed it because I needed to be able to play back XDCam masters for closed captioning, and it seems to be working very well, even inside FCP.

Yes…I have that on my main computer and laptop. Very slick and easy.
I installed it when an entire P2 shoot was offloaded improperly. I edited that full shoot native MXF.
