Stutter On 60fps Footage Converted To 30fps Footage – Cinema Tools / 60D / 720P / FCP 7
I have just shot a promo in 60fps 720p on my Canon 60D, as the client has footage that is in 30 fps. The 60 fps H264 rushes have been converted to Pro Res, again at 60fps, This has then been Batch Conformed using Cinema Tools down to 30 fps 720p.
These clips play back in beautiful smooth slow mo in Quicktime player, however when I import into a 1280×720 30fps Pro Res sequence in FCP 7, the footage in the viewer and on the timeline, stutters on playback, like a very slight shake.
Anyone encountered this problem or can tell me where I am going wrong?

I have noticed that the original H264 rushes are at 59.94fps, I have converted all to 60. Could this be the culprit?
Still doesn’t explain why they play fine in Quicktime Player

Cinema Tools destructively changes the file so never do this to camera originals. Always to a copy AFTER converting to an edit codec like ProRes.

I need to deliver in 30fps, shot with my Canon 60D on NTSC settings, at 1280×720 60Fps assuming it would be 60fps. The Raw H264 is 59.94 fps in the QT Movie Inspector. I have converted these to 60fps Pro Res with MPEG Streamclip.
I have then duplicated these files as I know Cinema Tools is destructive and used batch conform to 30fps in Cinema Tools.
The now 30fps slow motion Pro Res files playback flawlessly in QT Player, but stutter in FCP. I have just done a test output via Compressor, and the QT playback doesn’t seem to skip.
The problem only seems to be in FCP
Does this help diagnose the problem?

This certainly does help.
You shouldn’t be dealing with straight up frame rates like 30fps, 60fps. TV airs at 29.97fps…has since color was introduced. So cameras shoot 29.97fps for NTSC. 720p60 is also not 60fps straight…it’s 59.94. Your camera shot that format, and for some reason you thought it was wrong. No, that’s right. 720p runs at 59.94fps.
So you need to go back and not convert to 60fps straight up, and not work 30fps straight up. 59.94…29.97. That’s what you need to focus on.

Thanks, that was what I figured, thanks for your help. But I can’t seem to find a 29.97fps 720p Pro Res project preset in FCP 7.
Any help with that?

Yeah…it’s non standard, so you’ll have to duplicate a setting, and make it. OR…convert a clip to that format, and then just add it to a new sequence. FCP will make the sequence match the clip.

Hello Again
I have done a test on my footage, converted the 59.94fps H264, to 59.94fps Pro Res 720p. Then converted that to 29.97fps, via cinema tools. This has then been imported onto a 29.97fps editing timebase sequence in FCP, and I am still getting the same stuttering issue.
I am totally lost on this one, anyone have any advice?
