  • Working with Pro Res 422 HQ on a laptop.

    Hello thanks for reading this!

I am about to start work editing on a 3 minute promo being shot on Arri Alexa.

I have been approached about using my own laptop with FCP 7 to edit. We’ll be on the move a bit. They are shooting 3 cameras over 4 days so I expect there to be a reasonable amount of footage. I would have plenty of media storage – GRAID connected by FW 800 probably. But will my computer be able to handle prores 422 HQ without transcoding? Or would it choke!!!

    Here is my laptop spec:

    MacBook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011.
    2.3GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 133 Mhz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OSX 10.8.3

    Many thanks in advance.

[John Bennet] “GRAID connected by FW 800 probably”

It will choke with a FW800 connection. Thunderbolt RAID is what you want. Also add an additional 4GB of RAM.

    Hi Steve

i think the plan now is to transcode to 422 LT then relink to HQ for client screenings.

    thanks again!

honestly, there will be no need to relink just for a screening.
your client will not be able to see a difference.

the real benefit of the higher data rate come in when you need to do a sophisticated GRADE on the footage.

    LT looks fine.
i know, i have cut a few features in LT, and we have had screenings in full-size cinemas.
