  • Upres and preserve Alpha channel?

I’ve got an SD video file (a transition) that I’m trying to run through compressor in order to upres it to HD and make it progressive. I know this won’t make it look much better, but it’s quick and I simply need it to fit the specs of my current project files. It’s currently 720×480 animation codec, and I’d love to upres it to 1920×1080. The trouble is when I run it through compressor, I seem to lose the alpha channel. Actually, when I bring the recompressed file into FCP, it recognizes the alpha channel (when I examine item properties), but in my timeline, it ingores it.

    Any thoughts?

Use the Apple ProRes with Alpha option…that’s ProRes 4444. That should do it.

Okay, this seemed to work, but only if I have frame controls turned off. If I turn them on, say good by to the alpha channel. Unfortunately, with the frame controls turned off, the final file, once imported, comes along with all these nasty interlacing lines. I can’t use it like that. Any other suggestions I could try?

Where did this transition come from? Do they make an HD version?

Any decent method I know that will upconvert well and de-interlace, will also strip the alpha.

    Look for other options…HD options.

Thanks, Shane. Unfortunately, I can’t just replace the transition with a different transition, as I’m in the process of re-editing an old prodction and I don’t have the option of buying new footage or transitions.

So you are not properly setting the Interlacing control.
Is the Animation clip Interlaced or Progressive?
Do you want the upsized version (1920×1080) to be Interlaced or Progressive/

Not exactly ideal, but have you tried up converting the file but leaving it Animation Codec.
    Is the Alpha retained?

If yes, then convert the upconverted Animation codec clip to ProRes 4444 in a separate pass.
Animation codec can be pretty lossless (apart from the upscaling), so the extra pass shouldn’t really lose you any quality.

The clip is currently interlaced. I’d like it to be progressive. Every time I turn on frame controls to export a progressive version, the alpha channel is lost.

Yep…it will be. That’ll happen no matter what you do to try to make it progressive. This is why I suggest you find an alternate transition.

Are you exporting with the “Millions of Colors +” option checked?
