  • Online editing necessary for DSLR footage imported at ProRes 422?

Posted by Jeffrey Cornell on March 19, 2013 at 5:30 pm

This may seem like a silly question, but I was wondering if it’s necessary to do an online edit when shooting with Canon cameras…mainly 60D/5D. I usually import the footage as ProRes 422 (LT) or ProRes 422.

So my question is, is it necessary to do an online edit and reimport the footage at say ProRes 422 (HQ) Is there really that much of a difference when outputting for DVD?

Thanks for the help in advance!

No, it is not necessary. The footage imported as ProRes LT or ProRes 422 is high resolution. Going to ProRes HQ will gain you nothing but larger files. ProRes HQ is really meant for 10 bit original source footage, like RED or AVCintra. DSLRs shoot 8-bit…so ProRes 422 or even LT is perfect for them.

There is no more quality to be squeezed out of the footage by going HQ.

IMO you’ll see a bit of grain and noise in the dark areas with LT. Go with 422 unless you’re really hurting for drive space.
