Express Slot to 5 bay SATA
FCP 7.0.3 – Timeline set to XDCam 1080 24p (same as camera). It always played full quality without dropped frames before the upgrade from FCP6 to 7.

December 11, 2012 at 3:44 pmHi Dave, thanks for jumping in.
I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard retained all my application and personal files.
After the installed Snow Leopard I upgraded using Software Update and then brought FCP from 7 to 7.0.3 using ProApplicationsUpdate2010-02 from https://support.apple.com/kb/DL949
So no clean instal.
Actually what I think I’m seeing is that FCP doesn’t seem to drop frames when I stop playing back on the external monitor Dell U2711 via dvi port and just use the Macbook Pro’s screen. Still need to test. Could this be the problem??? Not enough power to fire everything at the same time? Everything ran well before going from 6 to 7.
Thoughts?
Big thanks Dave 🙂

December 11, 2012 at 6:10 pmYes. The problem is FCP is constantly stopping with a dropped frames message when displaying video on the external Dell U2711 via DVI port, but not when playing on the Macbook pro screen.

December 11, 2012 at 6:27 pmSorry Dave (and folks), I posted to the wrong thread 🙂
Still waiting for that post to make it onto Cow. I mistakenly double posted 4-5 days ago and I’m still having to wait some time before my posts go live. I’m being moderated. Wondering when that process will end?

December 11, 2012 at 10:47 pmCan anyone lend a hand here. I read everything I could find on dropping frames but it still happening.
Macbook Pro 2008
Clean instal FCP 7.0.3
Video clip matches timeline settings.
Safe RT, Playback video quality: High, Playback frame rate: Full.
XDCam 1080 24p. Single video track. No effects.
Dell U2711 External monitor.
There is a lot less dropped frames when the monitor is off. Also, I can make FCP drop frames when i touch the trackpad sometimes.
Any ideas? Please?

December 11, 2012 at 11:03 pmOk problem solved… but not really.
I turned off the warning on dropped frames. I don’t suppose this will cause a problem during editing.Sorry I should mention again I have a Firmtek 5 bay SATA connect through an Express port.

A clean install its really don’t exists.
After a “clean install” of MacOS, QT and FCP, the system normally is a real mess, full of wrong permissions and directories.
After a clean install, I always run DiskWarrior and I always find that at least 30% of the directories are “out of order”.
That application is the one that have made possible for me to work for 10 years on a place without any kind of service or technical support. Makes your Mac sing.

December 12, 2012 at 6:49 pmHi Rafael,
Understood. I haven’t used DiskWarrior for years.
I did a permissions repair after my recent upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard and FCP6 to FCP 7. It found no errors. I know that permissions are different than directories but everything has always been very fast and now Snow Leopard moves even faster. Can’t believe how much faster browsing is! Crazy I went so long on that old OS.
Anyway, I turned of FCP’s warming on dropped frames and now everything runs along fine. I know it’s not good to have dropped frames warnings but don’t yet understand how it can impact my project. Like I said, It seems to be happening much more now that I have connected the Macbook to an external monitor. When I set the playback screen to the Macbook only there is much less frame dropping errors.

Unless the image plays to choppy, you won’t notice the drop frames.
I’ve disabled the “Warn on drop frames” years ago.[Jona Taylor] “When I set the playback screen to the Macbook only there is much less frame dropping errors.”
In certain situations people can’t even render when having a second monitor attached.
A second monitor always eats resources and can be a burden for a system short of GPU.

– Good to know that this will not be a problem.
