I have been working on a widescreen file taken from a PAL DVD. I am using the Nattress Converter to bring convert it from PAL to NTSC.

The original PAL file is 1280×720, 30fps.

It has to be brought into an NTSC timeline for the conversion. None of the presets fits the PAL specs so I finally settled on:
    Frame size HD: (960X720) 16:9
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720)
The file looks fine in the viewer, but has some black space left & right.

However, when I export it always come out squashed horizontally. I’ve tried some similar HD presets (none of the NTSC seem to come close) and always the same result.

    What am I doing wrong?

That isn’t PAL. PAL runs at 25fps. If the file is 30fps, that already is NTSC.

And you are using anamorphic 720p settings…960×720…instead of full raster settings…1280×720. Why? What version of FCP are you using?
