  • Trouble getting text to move across screen smoothly

Posted by Lee Burrows on September 24, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Hey everyone! Is there a way to get text to smoothly scroll across the screen(left-right;right-left)? The text artifacts in Final Cut whether I go across or up/down and it is annoying. It even artifacts on my computer so it is not interlacing. I have tried exporting motion quicktime movie files to see if that works with no luck. Any suggestions? Is there a filter or a way in After Effects to smooth out a scroll?

    Thanks!

Try Boris crawl set to horizontal movement. FCP moving text gens are awful.

Pretty much. Some people are fans of the graphic treatments available in Motion. LiveType was pretty good, but Apple didn’t like it. CHV offered some plugins for scrolls that allowed for some pretty cool formatting, but a little bit flaky — half-lines of text turning on and off at the top and bottom of screen when leading or following a graphic, for example.

It always seemed to me that LiveType was in some small way the basis of the way Motion worked. And later the basis for how some of iMovie and X worked. Just little bits, but then, LiveType itself was just a little bit.

    Thanks. I appreciate the suggestions.

Is there one simple way to move text left-right or right-left? Nothing is working for me so far 🙁

A crawl or just a few words. I would just keyframe a few words in the motion tab.

Thank you to everyone for responding with all these great suggestions. I’ve tried a few other things without success so I figured I let everyone know my timeline specs. Dave LaRonde may be the closest to the problem imo but I am still having it unfortunately.

    Codec:DVCPRO HD 720p60
    960X720
    Frame Rate is 29.97

I am currently just using Text in FCP and created an A to B move in the controls of text. Maybe I need to try to move the whole frame?

The clip is on you tube and can be viewed with the link below. The text is at :29 and 1:29 into the video. The clip on you tube is H264 but the problem exists in original file in FCP. It is less pronounced since it is uncompressed in FCP.

Thanks again for any input and all your help!

Thanks Dave. I’ll try bringing down the saturation a little and see if that helps.
