720p output for 1024×768 projector
We’ve edited a 720p video in FCP that needs to be exported and played through a projector outputting 1024×768 (4×3).
Using Compressor, I’m transcoding to H.264. Under the Geometry tab, I’ve set the frame size to 1024×768 and padding for 4×3. The exported product looks good, except for portions of the video featuring still photos. Those parts appear a bit saw toothed.
Does the solution here lie in the Frame Controls tab, and selecting a better resize filter? Thanks for any input.

That you shouldn’t even ask it.
If you are not pleased with a final product and your application offers better processing option, RUN and try them. Make a short test and see if you get something better.The “Frame Control’ don’t only allows to use better filters, but also process in 10b Floating Point, which is fundamental when managing 10b stuff (like Prores). If you don’t check the option, the 10b stuff is crunched to 8b, even if you export to a 10b codec.
Except for draft stuff, I always try to work with the best option available in an application.
This not necessarily means when the application says BEST. Some times the BEST option doesn’t adds nothing (but processing time), and some times is even counterproductive (time-base changing), but for resizing, BEST is the way to go by default.

And the projector has no “Anamorphic”?
If so that sounds like a very old machine.

Dave — letterbox was the target. I re-exported with Compressor, setting the resize filter to best. The result looked great. Indeed, trial and error is sometimes best. Other times it reveals nothing and then this forum bails me out!
