Title Fade Question
Posted by Jay Handleson on April 25, 2005 at 1:57 amHi,
I am bran new to AE and have picked up a copy of 5.0. I’m trying to create a moving title that dissolves in and out over an avi I have imported. How do I apply the dissolve effect to the text and not the avi composition? I’ve tried using the text as an adjustment layer but am not getting anywhere with it.
Thanks,
JayH

April 25, 2005 at 2:25 amAll you do is key frame the text opacity layer, move the current time indicator to the specific spot then set the opacity to 0. Then determine the duration of the dissolve and set another key frame to 100 %. The just duplicate that for the fade out but (REVERSE THE KEYFRAMES FROM 100 to 0%. and you now have a dissovle.
Good luck,

April 25, 2005 at 2:41 amI don’t have the option of opacity for the text I have inserted. I understand what you are saying witht the keyframes and opacity, but it is not available on any text options.
This is all done as one composition right?
Thanks,
Jay

April 25, 2005 at 2:58 amDefine in a bit more detain what you need. If it’s just a simple fade-in and fade-out of the titles, that’s easily found in the earliest chapters of the manual. If you’re trying to take the AVI and use it as a gradient layer for an transsition, do a search for “track matte” and you’ll find a load of stuff right within the manual for this level of instruction.

April 25, 2005 at 3:53 amEffects are applied to layers in AE. In 5.0, text effects are best applied to a solid layer. Layer>new>solid. I believe the text should be applied in “transparent”, not “over original” mode — in the text effect settings.
Keyframe the opacity of the solid, and the text will follow suit.
Adjustment layers are meant to affect all layers below them. Using them to affect one layer can cause trouble later on.
AE is not meant to be used by jumping in. It has its own workflow, which can be different from that of editing apps. A little time spent with the manual can work wonders.
