FCP 7 squeezes videos on export

Im working w several different SD videos. I am placing these SD 4×3 videos into 1080p timelines. Its a prores 422 timeline.

My sequence settings are as follows:
1920×1080
HDTV 1080i (16×9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio 1440×1080

When I place the SD 4×3 videos into the timeline is asks if I want to set the timeline to the video and I say no. I get the pillar boxes and thats fine. I get a 4×3 SD video inside a 1080 16×9 box.

When I go to export I leave it as sequence settings and the final product is squeezed.

Any ideas?

Why isn’t your pixel aspect square? There’s your problem.

When I make the pixel aspect square my QT comes out 4×3 pinched and not 16×9 pinched. Im looking for the 4×3 image to remain 4×3 within a 16×9 box

I agree with Bret.
You need a 1920×1080 SQ pixel sequence.
Make sure that the SD stuff shows the proper settings on the Browser.

True. Everything has to line up. What are the specs of the SD video? 720×480 DV or 720×486? In either case they wouldn’t be square pixels as SD isn’t square pixel.

640×480 are the dimensions.

Ive been creating dif combo of test files. This is a nightmare.

I’ll ask the obvious question, why are you trying to do this, it won’t improve the quality, rather it will degrade it.

Then make sure that in the Browser has Squared pixels.
When you drop that on a 1920×1080 SQ pixels sequence you will get the picture pillar-boxed but keeping the original 4×3 aspect.
Make sure nothing is checked as Anamorphic.

Im doing this bc the client wants to put a 4×3 video in a 16×9 box. They dont care about the pillar box. Ya Im not trying to make SD footage HD.

One other thing i saw was that my timeline was set to DVCpro and that made a 4:3 export regardless of the dimensions of the timeline. When I made it prores it worked the way it was suppose too.

The “distort” too was also set to 68.75 instead of 33
