  FCP7 Best Codec for 720p Shot with Canon T1i DSLR?

  Hi guys,

  What is the best codec to use for a .mov clip shot in 1280×720 with Canon T1i DSLR? I’m new to video editing and the selections for codecs are overwhelming!

  Transcode to Apple ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (LT). If you plan on doing color correction, matte generation, keying, etc. use 422. If you’re just doing straight cuts use (LT).

  To transcode you can use Compressor, Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip, or 5DtoRGB.

  I use MPEG Streamclip. It gave me the option of exporting to QT, DV, AVI, and MPEG4, etc… If i want to preserve the highest video/audio quality but compress the file size down, which option do i go for? I will be doing color correction and cuts with FCP7. It will be uploaded to Youtube.

  QT ProRes 422 (or LT) is best for FCP. DV is standard def and an old poor codec. mpeg4 is not an editing codec and AVI is a windows wrapper, again not useful in FCP.

  So only use QT and ProRes at 720 frame size is best.

  Thanks, appreciate it! Made my first ever video and it came out pretty decent. ~7gb for a mere 7 minutes of video+audio in .mov. Compressed it down to ~400mb in .mp4 and the quality stayed pretty decent!
