Playback lag 5400RPM or 7200RPM Hard Drives?
When my sequences get fairly large at times I will get playback lag when viewing rendered work in full screen from my sequence. I had read that it can have something to do with hard drive spin speed and that 7200RPM is recommended for video work. Would 5400RPM drives create this type of issue? Or is this more so only going to be a problem when rendering?
My system right now is an iMac with 4GB ram. The playback lag doesn’t happen all the time. At times final cut will get extremely slow also and i can’t figure out the issue as the problem seems to happen at weird times. Any ideas? Does RPM speed affect it a lot?

Yes, slow drives will effect playback. 5200 is too slow for video. And your system drive should NEVER be used to store media. Gotta get a firewire external that is at least 7200RPM.

Shane is right. Also, eSATA, Firewire 800, or Thunderbolt if you have it on the iMac. Anything less would not help. A RAID enclosure would help with speed as well.
