Rendering XDCAM Footage on a ProRes Timeline
Hi Everybody,
a small question out of uncertainty: I have XDCAM EX 1080p25 Footage, on a timeline with the same settings. Since I want to render everything in the final as Apple ProRes, I have 2 Qs:
1. With this kind of XDCAM Footage, should the final be rendered in ProRes or ProRes LT is good enough? There is Grading applied – kind of heavy one – with Magic Bullet Looks and some Titles & Graphics (not many and fairly simple).
2. I want to render the timeline and watch it before exporting. Since I want to export in ProRes, can I set the timeline compression settings already to ProRes (from XDCAM EX), cause when I rendered it on the timeline and it’s good, it’s faster to output then.

I think the thing to do is render to prores in an xdcam sequence setting.
Whether you choose LT or not is up to you, but I doubt there will be much difference in the end unless there’s a lot of motion in the video. If there is then up the quality of the ProRes setting.

thanx for the reply.
But the problem I have with this (since it’s a long concert and it takes ages to render each time): When I set the Sequence setting to XDCAM with render effects to ProRes, and render it all, watch it, and when it’s ok output it with current settings, then it’s a MPEG-2 in the final result.
So, I have to put the output settings to Prores and then it doe shave to re render it all again – very time consuming.
It’s not an option, just to set the timeline codec already to ProRes – watch it and when all is ok, it’s easier to output in the current settings.
Does it to bad to the XDCAM footage to set the timeline to ProRes?Thanx.

That’s another way to do it, and it’s no better or worse than just rendering to prores don’t think. Same computer code used for the compression AFIK.
But in reality, I’ve found transcoding ANY GOP structured source file to ProRes before I edit is the fastest way to get to the finish line. Just takes more storage of course.
