  • AF101 Footage – 10 Bit YUV rendering or No?

    Hallo Everybody,

    I have footage from the Panasonic AF-101 recorded to the internal SD cards.
    Log & transfered them into ProRes LT, now I onlined the clip inside FCP.
    Should I set the timeline to 10-Bit YUV or will there be no difference to the 8-Bit with this kind of footage and Codec?

    The camera originals are 8 bit? If you have done grading, particularly if you have grads or vignettes, you might see banding in 8 bit.

    No harm in rendering 10 bit but no need unless you have done image processing or grading.

    Even if your stuff was just 8b, is not only about footage bit-depth, but about rendering PRECISION.
    Any filter, any animation, any key-framing you make will be calculated with more accuracy. Any value increment can be done with much more subtle steps.
    Any final export I do in FC I set “High Precision” and “Motion Effects Best”.
    The difference may be noticeable or not, but make sure it couldn’t be better done.

    Thanx guys for the helpful advice.
    Yes, I did grading and there is some transitions that are kind of effects & Vignettes as well.
    The Problem:

    When I rendered out in 10-Bit, the Effect “G Film – Interpositive 1”, which is apples to a graphics gets totally messed up.
    Any idea why that happens? I don’t wanna replace it with the normal crossfade, because on that bit the normal Fade does not look good.
    In 8-Bit, there is no problem with that transition.

    …and one more question:

    I never understood the difference between:

    “Render 10-Bit material in high-precision YUV” or “Render all YUV material in high-precision YUV”.

    What’s the difference? And which one should I usual go for?

    I have the same. I thought to write to G Nattress to ask him why, but I’ve never done so.
    Try setting the transition to RGB.

    In case that you are mixing stuff that is 8bYUV (ie DV) with 10b material, in the first case the 8bYUV stuff will be rendered only at 8b.

    Hi RAphael,

    thanx. I did a work around now: First I exported that graphic, with the G Filter applied to it in 8 Bit, Re-imported and dropped the rendered clip into the 10Bit Line. Works. still stupid though.
