  DV Tape to FCP

  I have some SD MiniDV archival tapes that I want capture video from and ultimately process in FCPX for online use. I have begun the process and am capturing and doing a rough cut edits in FCP 6 (Leopard). I have noticed some of the captured clips (NTSC 720×480) have a narrow vertical black margin on the left and right. Using the Motion Tab and increasing size to 102% is enough to eliminate these margins.

  -Motion Tab at 102%, Crop, or another method?? – which method will degrade the video the least?

  I plan to bring clips into Tiger and use “Encode Selected Video Files”
  480p, Higher Quality (xxx.mov encodes to xxx.m4v) to preprocess clips for final edits, audio & color balancing in FCPX

  -Is there an alternate means of processing the clips that will result in better quality clips?

  Capture and edit in DV-NTSC. You not going to get any better quality by doing anything else.

  If you’re going out to DVD or Tape, you will not see those edges on the final.

  But you got it right, you can zoom in a little to hide it. Like if you’re playing it back on a comp…
