Partly brightness adjustment?
Hi there,
For quite some time I have duplicated a video track, placed it on top of the existing video track, and made a feathered “hole” in the top track (by adding a garbage matte), which allows me to adjust brightness/contrast/saturation etc independently in the 2 tracks. Makes sense? Ie if I want to raise the light, brightness on a talking head, but keep the background at the recorded level, this would be the way for me to do it. But I keep thinking, that there must be an easier alternative to this “selective adjustment”…? Any feature that I’ve missed?Thank you very much,

Colorista2 by redgiantsoftware.com is a color correction plugin that is far superior to what FCP offers, and it has SECONDARIES that allows you to VIGNETTE are area of your choosing, and make adjustments only to that area.

I’ve just watched the colorista2 highlights video – seems that this will solve the “problem” – at least making work progress (and probably end result!) better and more smooth!

And, Apple Color also has the same capability.

True! However, Color is free, and Colorista 2 is “rather” expensive.

The 3 way color corrector should be able to do this just fine. It really is powerful once you learn how to use it. Once you’ve created a matte with it for the area you want to correct, duplicate the effect and invert the matte on the second instance and you can adjust the rest of the image. And of course you won’t have to keyframe the mattes since its based on chroma and luma like a color key and will follow the image. Only time you need a garbage matte is if two areas are too similar to be adjusted separately, but that’s going to be the case with any tools.
