So I pre-rendered a nested compostion for the first time. I decided that I wanted that composition to not be pre-rendered for work flow reasons. I looked in the AE help and it says that I can re-render my pre-render but it doesn’t say that I can get rid of it. Can I revert back to the original version?

Well, I did, but I’ve done many hours of work on it since then. I guess thats what I get for experimenting during a large project.

Well, unless you deleted the original composition after you pre-rendered (there would be no reason to do that) you should be fine. Just find where your pre-rendered footage appears in other compositions and replace each instance with the original comp:

    1) Right click the pre-rendered footage in your project pane and go to the bottom option “Reveal In Composition.”

    2) Select one of the compositions it appears in from the drop down menu, you should be taken to that composition and the pre-rendered layer should be automatically selected.

    3) Drag your original composition onto your timeline while holding option (or alt on PC) to replace the pre-rendered footage with the original composition.

    4) Start at step 1 and repeat for every instance of the pre-rendered footage.

You should use proxies instead. Prerender your nested comp, set the rendered file as its proxy. Then you can toggle the proxy on/off as needed, or open the nested comp and modify it and then delete the proxy.
