FCP Capture Blues – Sony J-H1 HDCam Deck
Trying to get FCP 7.0 to recognize an old Sony J-H1 HDCAM deck. I’ve played with the Capture/Device Control settings with no avail. Changed cables and different firewire (400 vs. 800) ports on the computer, also with no luck.
Any thoughts?
Someone told me that you can only capture SD out of the firewire port on this deck. Is there any truth to that? At this point I will take SD over nothing, but the full HD would be better.
The following is the info on the computer that we are trying to capture to:

You may have to turn on the firewire connection on the deck through the menu on the deck. I think it’s called i.LINK. I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing that you are correct about SD only through the firewire.

Via firewire you will only get DV, as a matter of fact. The lowest format of SD. And you won’t get deck control…only a video signal. So it will have to be an UNCONTROLLED DEVICE setting for this, and you’ll have to manually control the deck.

And you might have to look in the settings to make sure that DV is set up to go out via firewire. It might default to it…but need to be sure.

Thanks much for the replies. I was able to get deck control, but only with a 720×480 output. Looking into an internal capture card with component connections to get around this.

Capture i/o devices from Matrox, AJA and Black Magic are so affordable these days. Everyone should have them. You can even monitor your timeline via inexpensive LCD TV’s.
External units you can use on both the Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro (firewire 800 or Express 34) and PCIe units just for the Mac Pro.
With Thunderbolt units, you can connect to MBP and iMac.

Anybody have any experience with a BlackmagicDesign DeckLink Studio card? Looks like it will give us the ability to capture the HDCam tapes in true HD via component connections.
