Cutting stereoscopic Footage (AVCHD MTS / MVC) in Final Cut – workflow?
Hey!
I need to cut a little movie which is recorded with a Sony NXCAM in 3D. Now the question how to build the workflow. Since the material (left+right eye) is in one MTS file and I briefly don’t want to cut in Sony Vegas I’d like to know how you would proceed.
From what I have seen it seems to be pretty usual to cut in the native AVCHD / MVC format, is it …at least in Sony Vegas.
The thing is: I’d like to cut in Final Cut Pro, and now the question: would you recommend to cut in the native format (which is actually h.264 …and I think everytime I mentioned somehwere I work with h264 footage in the NLE I saw the eyes rolling if you know what I mean..)
So I read there is a Sony utility to extract left+right eye from the MTS file … so my workflow as I think would be as followed: extract left+right video, convert to ProRes, then use Stereo3D Toolbox LE to cut it –
What do you think? Is this the way to go?

Cutting that camera footage native is not the way to go. Not at all.
And the only way to do 3D in FCP is with the Dashwood plugin:

Not possible since I first would have to convert it to ProRes which is not really possible without two straight days of work ONLY for the conversion – that time is better invested in cutting in Vegas, I guess…
What a strange industry … ah, wait it’s a Sony. No further questions.
