  • Bullet whole / splintering wood effect?

Posted by Conzy on November 9, 2007 at 9:01 pm

I need to achieve the effect of some bullets bursting through a wooden door and making a hole ans splintering some wood for a film im working on.

I have a front on shot of the scene, and a plate of just the door and a plate of the outside scenery behind the doors…

I was thinking of using the shatter plugin to try and shatter some parts of the door…

Any other ideas? How do I make a realistic bullet hole in a wooden door? Metal doors are a lot easier 🙂

    Any help greatly appreciated

Yep, use shatter. You’ll need to make a shatter map for the splinters of wood. There should be some shatter tutorials on the COW.

AE doesn’t always give the most realistic results.
For something more realistic, use a 3D app.
For something more realistic than that, reshoot with a practical effect on set.

    But you knew that. 🙂

I find this very interesting but how to implement it is still a big question.

Probably the best way is to find an image of a bullet hole in wood and composite that into your shot. Cut from no-hole to hole. For the flying debris, apparently Video Copilot’s “action essentials” may have what you need.

Now, if we wanted realistic close-up flying splinters and all, especially in slow motion, we’re probably best hiring a 3D animator. In my opinion, AE is good for faking it, not for realistic close-up CGI.
