  • Alpha transition’s glowing edge becomes inverted?

Posted by Ian Dillon on October 7, 2011 at 3:41 am

I am creating an alpha transition similar to flying through a glowing white circle. I rendered it out in After Effects (w/ straight alpha) and it looks perfect when I layer it in FCP, with a soft white glow. However, if I bring it into the Alpha Channel Transition effect in FCP, and drop it into the “Clip” box, it seems to have reversed the glow (so now it glows black).

The “Wipe matte” clip I created for the effect works fine and it transitions to the next clip nicely. I did not put anything in the “Clip Alpha Matte” box since the FCP manual says it is not require if the “Clip” file already has an alpha. I did try that, however, and it was still messed up.

    Thanks in advance!
    Ian.

    I’m using FCP 7.

In AE, make sure that you are exporting out as PRORESS 4444. Also select RGB + ALPHA. This is the important part: Make sure you choose STRAIGHT not PRE-MULTIPLIED.

This should take care of your problem. Don’t worry about the little popup that comes up and says Bit Depth exceeded.

    Hope this helps.
