  Anyway to get 40-60mins of ProRess down to around 100MB? mpg4/h264

  My client wants several 40-60min videos compressed down to SD and HD version that he can sell as downloadable files – he wants them to be around 100MB – is this possible?

  Im trying to do the SD (small dimensions) first, then HD resolution using Quicktime pro / compressor and h.264 – lowest i have it is around 250MB

  Yeah it’s possible. You just need to drop your data rate on your encode. Aiming at a 100MB total for a 40 minute file I’d guess you’ll set your data rate around 200kbits/sec for your video portion and probably around 64kbits/sec for the audio. If you up one, then you’ll need to lower the other. Higher video rate = lower audio rate or vice versa.

  With these data rates HD won’t be possibly (at least cleanly). If you (or your client) want HD then you’ll need to up the overall size substantially (maybe 200 or 300MB total, not 100MB).

  200kbps / 64kbps aac was the lowest ive tried and it came out really blocky

  400kbps is pretty decent – blocky during cross dissolves, fast movement but ok.

  My client is on a tight data allowance – but 100mb for a 40-60min video file is pushing it somewhat!

  Just a comment on this- it drives me mental when clients have that, its like “you can’t work with video and have an attitude of ‘oh yeah, please just send us a yousendit of 50mb for an HD 3 hour clip’ OR ‘please keep it less than 100MB because we don’t have space’ etc. Some people need to wake up to 2011.

  Anyway yeah, 200Kbps would come out quite blocky for that sort of footage- the data simply isnt there. I would suggest negotiating a better option with the client 🙂 (and telling them if they want video work done they need to step up a few years!) …sorry, ranting again… 😀
