Does anyone have an opinion about whether these video cards would be worth purchasing used ($350 for the Quadro and $150 for the 7800)? This would be for a
    – Mac Intel Dual Core running AE7.
(Yes, I know that AE8 is better for the Intel, but all of my clients are on 7 so I have to go by what they want. If only these versions were backwards compatible.)

Any real life experience is greatly appreciated.

Oh, I’m running a 23″ and a 30″ cinema display off of the card that came with the Intel Mac.

I have the exact quadro and it works great! AE open gl isnt very developed yet. If you wanted to stay ahead of the game, the quadro is a good bet.

since the price difference isn’t too great i’d probably go with the quadro…

however, having the extra opengl prower won’t be much of any use to you in ae7 on a macpro. you will want to disable opengl previews running ae7 under rosetta (it’s a simple check box in ae’s preview pref).

otherwise any time you apply an opengl accelerated effect (like gausian blur, fast blur, levels, curves, etc…) ae will crash.

also, the cc effects cause instability in ae7 on an intel-mac. so, save often when using them.

and if you have less than 2-3gb of ram, you may want to check out this thread on memory and cache settings for intel-macs running ae7.

These cards sound like they’re system pulls from the Late 2005 G5s which also had PCI-Express graphics. If that’s the case, these cards won’t work in a Mac Pro. The ROM on the card is designed for booting in a G5, and the Mac Pros use an entirely different booting method.

The Quadro was offered for the Mac Pro as well, so it’s possible to get one that will work. So if you go that route, verify that it came out of a Mac Pro and not a G5.

that’s true, you need to make sure they came from a macpro…

also, what is the current card you have in the macpro?

if it’s the ati radeon x1900 xt, i wouldn’t bother getting another card. it will perform as good as the quadro in most apps.

Wow thank you all for your feedback, especially about the possibility of these cards not being able to run on the MacPro.

I currently have the nVidia GForce 7300GT. Where could I find out what cards would be compatible and work with Rosetta AND will also work with AE8 when the time comes to upgrade to 8.

Being stuck in 7 sucks, but it has to stay that way for a bit. I discovered the Cycore fx problems the hard way this weekend when I was working on a G5 at home and then opened the file on my Intel.
