Timeline render bit rate vs Compressor quality

Hoping someone could chime in on this admittedly basic question…
I have 10-bit HD footage but to avoid frame stuttering, I set my FCP timeline to render in 8-bit. My question is – when I send to Compressor, does Compressor use the original 10-bit footage or does it start with the 8-bit rendered footage in FCP and do its transcoding from there?
Obviously I want to maximize the quality. Do I have to first re-render my FCP timeline in 10-bit before sending to Compressor in order to maximize quality in Compressor’s final output?

August 26, 2011 at 10:55 amIf you “Send to Compressor”, the time-line will be rendered with the bit depth of you sequence before reaching Compressor.
Your 10b stuff wil be crunched to 8b.

August 26, 2011 at 12:09 pmChange the setting back to 10 bit rendering… Then don’t even bother to render it. Just send the unrendered sequence to Compressor. Compressor will add the filters and effects during the compression to your delivery format actually saving a digital generation (that skipped render).

August 26, 2011 at 2:18 pmI believe it should do that no matter what the sequence settings. It’s supposed to skip the intermediate render and render straight to mpeg 2 from the source 10 bit HD files. Sequence settings, rendered or not, should be ignored. That’s why it’s so ridiculously slow, no?

The slowness will be even a bit slower with unrendered material too.Jerry

Not really.
Compressor can´t do nothing inside FC.
FC does all the time-line work (effects, motion), just skeeping the Sequence Codec compression.
FC hands Compressor an Uncompressed 4.4.4 with the bit depth SET IN THE FC´s RENDER OPTIONS.
Compressor will do what you haveset on Compressor: resizing, time-base changing, deinterlacing, MPEG-2, H264,..[Jerry Hofmann] “actually saving a digital generation (that skipped render).”
If you were working in 10b Unc, the only thing you skipp, is a 444 to 422 downsampling.
In the other hand you will waste time.
If you send to a double-pass MPEG-2, FC must render your sequence twice. If you send to a multi-pass H262, will be rendered three times.
The best: Set render ALL YUV in high prcision, export a Self-contained 10b Unc, and import to Compressor.
